Final Blog

Here are final reflections from the group leader, Angie Baronoski

Before leaving for Nicaragua, I was a bundle of nerves.  I was the group leader for 22 people, going to a country where I had never been.  I had one of my own children with me, but was leaving two behind.  Would I be able to do this?  Could I keep all of these people safe and sound?  Could my husband manage my sons without me?  Would a snowstorm sabotage everything?  These were just a few of the questions chasing each other around in my head.

Very quickly I discovered that I had nothing to fear.  The students who accompanied me were wonderful.  They were so responsible, accepting of each situation we encountered, and willing to try
everything. The other adult chaperones on the trip were helpful and really stepped up to the plate to
get involved.   My own child quickly adjusted to the group and to being in Nicaragua, and the Amped for Education staff was so knowledgeable, friendly and willing to help that I was able to relax and enjoy!

Throughout the week I was impressed by the balance of the trip.  It was the perfect blend of fun and
work, relaxing and learning.  We had time to be busy but also to relax.  We had some thrills like zip lining upside down but also some serious evening discussions and physical work.   The high point of the trip for many of the students was interacting with the Nicaraguan kids and getting to know them personally. It was mind blowing to them to realize that those kids are JUST LIKE THEM!

Nicaragua is an amazing country.  I loved the weather, the markets, the food, the architecture, but most of all the people.   As we walked down the streets or strolled through the market places we were met by smiles and friendly greetings.  We saw no anger, no threatening looks, nothing that was scary or intimidating.  I never once felt like we were in danger.  Although I was happy to return home to see my family, I quickly began to reminisce about the time spent in that fabulous country and the wheels in my brain started churning…thinking about the next time I will go.

I want to say a special thank you to Jeff, Sarah, Kate, Doug, and Cameo for the wonderful work that they do in Nicaragua and for the special care that they showed us during our stay.  The students have continued to talk about Nicaragua and to ask about the next trip to come.  The Amped group made such special connections to the students and took the time to really get to know all of us.  This experience has been life changing for many of us.  Thank you so much.
